A House in Bali

View video clips from the June 2009 world premiere of A House in Bali at the outdoor Water Palace Theater at the gate of Puri Saraswati, the king's residence, in Bali. Aspects of the production viewed here will change as the American premiere will take place on the Zellerbach Hall stage, where real-time video technology will be used to create a "wider-ranging, more dream-like set," according to director Jay Scheib.

Merce Cunningham and Robert Cole Reminisce

Watch and listen as choreographer Merce Cunningham and Robert Cole, Cal Performances' former Director, tell the story of a near catastrophe that occurred on stage the first time they worked together over 50 years ago in Buffalo, New York. This segment was shot in 2008 at Ford Point in Richmond, CA., while Cunningham was making preparations for The Craneway Event commissioned by Cal Performances and performed November 9, 2008. Three Decembers

Composer Jake Heggie plays excerpts from and talks about his new chamber opera Three Decembers based on an original story by Terence McNally. The opera stars mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and is about the loving but often-strained relationship between a famous actress and her two grown children. The 2008 West Coast premiere was co-presented by Cal Performances and the San Francisco Opera. (Length: 6:30)

Three Decembers: Jake Heggie and Frederica von Stade Interview

Composer Jake Heggie and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade talk about Heggie's new chamber opera Three Decembers in which von Stade stars. The story revolves around the loving but often-strained relationship between a famous actress (sung by von Stade) and her two grown children, one of whom is a gay man whose partner is dying of AIDs and the other an alcoholic daughter in a failing marriage.
