SchoolTime Brochure and Application Form [pdf]

Cal Performances' SchoolTime program makes the performing arts a vital part of K-12 education. Students from throughout Northern California experience performances at Zellerbach Hall given by the same top-caliber artists on our main season. Customized study guides encourage pre-and post show learning by connecting the art forms on the stage to core curricular subjects, as well as history, geography and world cultures.

SchoolTime performances are one hour in length and begin at 11:00 am—and still cost just $4 per seat!

2009-10 SchoolTime Series
All SchoolTime Performances take place at 11 am - 12 noon in Zellerbach Hall

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
Scenes from Love's Labour's Lost

Thu, Nov 5
The King of Navarre and his scholarly courtiers have forsworn all worldly pleasures, but a visit from the Princess of France and her lovely entourage soon has the King's men tearing up their own rulebook. Shakespeare's early comedy, a mighty display of every weapon in the Bard's comic arsenal, is a joyous romp of physical comedy, mistaken identity, cross-purposes, parody and playful language. London's own Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Company brings the work alive with Renaissance staging, costumes, and music. Select scenes from the play will be presented at the SchoolTime performance.

Peking Acrobats
Mon, Jan 25
Tue, Jan 26
Direct from the People's Republic of China, the Peking Acrobats travel the world as diplomats of their spirited art form. Employing wondrous special effects and lively accompaniment by musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments, the tumblers, cyclists, jugglers, and clowns transform their 2000-year-old athletic discipline into a kaleidoscope of action and wonder. "Amazing! Zounds! The vocabulary of exclamation seeks expression as the medium of awed and surprised reaction to the wondrous feats of the Peking Acrobats!" (New York Times)

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Thu, Mar 11
Fri, Mar 12
The SchoolTime series would not be complete without the astonishing Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; "Its never-fail dependability—superlative dancers, tight, driving works—is surely unbeaten in the dance world" (The Washington Post). Following in Mr. Ailey's visionary footsteps, artistic director Judith Jamison leads the troupe of dancers to inspired heights, and today, each performance powerfully confirms the company's towering reputation of artistry, strength, and passion.

Altan
Fri, Mar 19
No Irish traditional band in the last dozen years has had a wider impact on music lovers than Altan, "the hottest group in the Celtic realm these days" (The Boston Globe). With a repertory that ranges from tender and moving Irish folk songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs, Altan delights fans from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle with heartwarming live performances and award-winning recordings, The members of Altan believe that Irish traditional music is a modern music in every sense, and the band's growing influence and popularity have proved them right.

Sweet Honey In The Rock
Fri, Apr 23
Creating unforgettable music from the rich textures of their African American legacy, Sweet Honey In The Rock possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip-hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. "This ensemble is the gold standard... their voices are all fabulous, and they unite to create a sound so pure, smooth and homogenous that it does not seem humanly possible" (Fort Worth Star Telegram). The group's annual Cal Performances appearances are consistently joyous celebrations of life, love, and song.

Ballet Folklorico "Quetzalli" de Veracruz
Mon, May 3
"Quetzalli" is one of Mexico's most popular exports, conjuring from their skillful performances a "heady rush of tapping heels, dazzling costumes, and insistent rhythms!" (Kansas City Star). For more than 20 years, the group has earned standing ovations worldwide with its musical and visual fiesta. Quetzalli's programs offer a riveting mix of culture and folklore enfolded within the regional dances of old Mexico, in particular the company's home state of Veracruz. The music, performed on stringed instruments from the region, provides a thrilling accompaniment to the precise movement, colorful costumes, and driving rhythms of these superb artists.
