Welcome to Cal Performances' SchoolTime |
Of all the performances of land and sea,
SchoolTime performance is the place for me.
You never know what you'll see,
So relax, it's ok, that's what it should be.
You never know what you might hear,
This show is the best of the year! 5th grade student about Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater | |
The audience is seated, the houselights are dimming and the curtain is rising...it's time for you to join Cal Performances' SchoolTime program to experience premier performers from around the world at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus.
Each year, some 20,000 Bay Area school children attend specially scheduled daytime performances at Zellerbach Hall given by the same top-caliber artists and companies on our main season. Cal Performances' SchoolTime program guarantees that the performing arts are a part of these students' education by keeping the ticket price low (still only $4 per student, teacher, or adult chaperone!) and by providing study materials for the classroom. K-12 teachers from 35 Northern California school districts have come to rely on SchoolTime as an important part of their academic planning.
All SchoolTime performances are accompanied by study guides that provide comprehensive introductory information on the programs students will see at the theater, plus connections to core curricular subjects such as social studies, literature, and history, and suggested classroom activities. Designed to encourage pre- and post-show learning and discussion in the classroom, study guides support the Reading/Language Arts Framework and the Visual and Performing Arts Standards for California public schools. Study guides are mailed prior to the performance and are available online. All SchoolTime performances are one hour in length and take place in Zellerbach Hall beginning at 11 am.
| | This is a great service to our school (and all schools). The materials sent prior to the performances were extremely helpful. The performance and our whole experience was wonderful! Teacher comment from online survey |
These daytime performances by world-class artists instill in young audiences an understanding of, and a love for, the performing arts. Each Cal Performances' SchoolTime show is one hour long and priced at only $4 per person. So reserve your seats for this season's performances and we look forward to seeing your class at the theater!
The 2008/09 SchoolTime brochure and order form will be available at the end of August, 2008.

- To be considered for alternate shows if your selections are sold out, please indicate this in the space provided. The SchoolTime coordinator will contact you if there is space available.

This program, which began in 2001 as a partnership between Cal Performances and the Berkeley Unified School District as a team of the John F. Kennedy Center's Partners in Education Program, provides the tools for an arts integrated curriculum. Professional development workshops for teachers lead to an incomparable experience for students, with dynamically presented lesson plans; teaching artists in the classroom; and a culminating SchoolTime field trip.
"Friends of the Schools" are small businesses and community organizations that sponsor a school or class visit to a SchoolTime performance at Cal Performances.
SchoolTime is one of only a few performing arts programs with a ticket priced as low as $4 per student or adult chaperone. But even at this modest cost not all schools have the resources to allow their students to attend SchoolTime and experience the beauty and discipline of the performing arts. To fill that need, "Friends of the Schools" enables students in underserved areas to attend a performance at Zellerbach Hall.
As a "Friends of the Schools" sponsor, you have the opportunity to sponsor the class or school of your choice, or we can bring to your attention particular classes or schools that would benefit most from your generosity.
While "Friends of the Schools" sponsors receive the satisfaction of helping to enrich the lives of students, they also:
- Receive recognition in the "Friends of the Schools" donor list in Cal Performances program book, as well as in newsletters and program book articles.
- Are invited to attend the SchoolTime performance they sponsor.
- Are provided with one pair of tickets to a holiday or world stage performance during the season as an expression of our gratitude from Cal Performances.
- And "Friends of the Schools' contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
