Artist Talk
David Harrington, Artistic Director, Kronos Quartet
Sonic Immersion: An Exploration of Eclectic and Unusual Sounds and Musics
Mon, Dec 7, 7:30 pm, 125 Morrison Hall
Through more than three decades of work with the Kronos Quartet, David Harrington has had a profound impact on contemporary music, bringing a wide array of musical and sonic influences into the string quartet repertoire and the world of Western classical music. In the process, he and Kronos have expanded the perspectives and range of sound possibilities available to performers, composers and audiences alike. Harrington will play a diverse selection of recordings that provide insight into his creative and curatorial process: commissioning works from composers who can re-envision what a string quartet is able to do, developing concert experiences that expand the definition of what a string quartet performance can be, and assembling recording projects that challenge established ideas of how a string quartet can sound. The world of sounds that influence his work is expansive and eclectic, and examples for this presentation will be drawn from a extensive sound-recording collection amassed over three decades of international concertizing; in previous presentations his selections have ranged from the sounds of Weddell seals in Antarctica to a Tuareg band from Timbuktu.
Harrington will share sounds and musics that have surprised, magnetized and motivated him in a conversation with David Wessel, co-director of the Center for New Music and Audio Technology. This event is presented by the Berkeley Center for New Media as part of the Art, Technology and Culture Colloquium, a series sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor.
