SchoolTime
Cal Performances' SchoolTime program makes the performing arts a vital part of K-12 education. Each year, students from throughout Northern California experience performances at Zellerbach Hall given by the same top-caliber artists on our main season. Customized study guides encourage pre-and post show learning by connecting the art forms on the stage to core curricular subjects, as well as history, geography and world cultures. SchoolTime performances are one hour in length and begin at 11:00 am—and still cost just $4 per seat! [learn more]
Cal Performances in the Classroom
A professional development workshop for teachers leads to an incomparable experience for students through Cal Performances in the Classroom. This program reinforces student comprehension in core content areas such as literature and social studies while enhancing students' knowledge about the arts and cultures at SchoolTime. Cal Performances in the Classroom programs are developed in partnership with the Berkeley Unified School District as a team of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Program. [learn more]
Study Guides
Created for pre- and post-performance learning, custom study guides prepare students for their field trip with engaging activities and discussion questions that encourage critical thinking and help students prepare for and reflect on their experience at the theater. [learn more]
Friends of the Schools
"Friends of the Schools" are small businesses and community organizations that sponsor a SchoolTime performance field trip for a school or a class. The program enables students—especially those who would otherwise not have exposure to the performing arts—to experience world-class artists at Cal Performances. [learn more]
AileyCamp
Combining ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance instruction with personal development and creative communication classes and field trips for middle school students, ages 11-14, from the Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond and Albany Unified School districts, AileyCamp is the nationally acclaimed 6-week youth program conceived by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and locally administrated by Cal Performances. AileyCamp is not a training ground for professional dancers but, instead, uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, self-discipline, creative expression and critical thinking skills among underserved 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
