Cal Performances in the Classroom Application Form [pdf]

A professional development workshop for teachers leads to an incomparable experience for students through Cal Performances in the Classroom. This program reinforces student comprehension in core content areas such as literature and social studies while enhancing students' knowledge about the arts and cultures at SchoolTime. Cal Performances in the Classroom programs are developed in partnership with the Berkeley Unified School District as a team of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Program.

A 3-Part Enrichment Program
Part 1: Professional Development Workshops for Teachers

Teaching artists lead 3-hour participatory workshops for teachers in conjunction with select SchoolTime performances. Teachers gain:

  • In-depth background on the artists and the art form presented at SchoolTime.
  • Tools to effectively integrate a SchoolTime field trip into their classroom curriculum .
  • Standards-based classroom activities that meet California Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards requirements.
  • Audio and visual materials for classroom use; and a certificate of completion and/or BUSD District credit upon request.
  • Engaged and inspired students.

Part 2: In-School Sessions with Artists

Teaching Artists work directly with students:

  • In class sessions reinforce teacher-led lessons from the workshop.
  • Students have hands-on experience in a performing art form.
  • They may learn dance, listen to the music of a particular culture, or participate in a theatrical exercise.
  • In-school sessions are subject to schedules and availability of artists.

Part 3: SchoolTime Performance

  • Students attend a SchoolTime performance at Zellerbach Hall, primed with personal experience in the art form they will see on the stage.
  • Comprehensive preparation gives them the ability to understand elements of performance unfolding on the stage.
  • Students have an enhanced experience that adds educational value to the field trip.

SchoolTime performance: Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (Nov 5)
Shakespeare's brilliant wordplay takes center stage in his bright comedy, Love's Labours Lost. Participants explore the language, style and themes of this clever play in a dynamic and accessible workshop led by teaching artists Rica Anderson (Cal Performances) and Trish Tillman (Cal Shakes).

Peking Acrobats

Peking Acrobats (Jan 25 & 26)

Chinese acrobats build their remarkable acts on four basic skills, beginning with the handstand. Wayne Huey of Red Panda Acrobats pulls back the curtain to reveal the history and culture of Chinese acrobatics, the training and discipline each young acrobat must undergo, and how an acrobat's ability to focus, take risks and cooperate can apply to student learning in our own culture. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Beloved by millions worldwide, Alvin Ailey's modern dance masterpiece Revelations remains relevant and moving because the inspired union of expressive movement and African American spirituals captures profound emotions of the human spirit. David McCauley (Cal Performances) and musician Melanie De More combine their expertise in dance and music to reveal how the interplay of dynamic gestural movement and evocative song bring this transformative piece to life. Sweet Honey In The Rock

The women of Sweet Honey In The Rock have developed a unique style based on African American song forms. Musicians Melanie De More, Rhonda Benin and Elouise Burrell trace the legacy of African American roots music from slavery, through civil rights to contemporary music.
