SchoolTime

2008/09 SchoolTime Series
2008/09 Study Guides
2008/09 Cal Performances in the Classrooom
Each year, some 20,000 Bay Area school children attend specially scheduled daytime performances at Zellerbach Hall on the University of California, Berkeley campus given by the same top-caliber artists and companies on our main season. Cal Performances' SchoolTime program guarantees that the performing arts are a part of every student's education by keeping the ticket price low (only $4 per student, teacher or adult chaperone!) and by providing study materials that support the Reading/Language Arts and Social Studies Frameworks, and Visual and Performing Arts Standards for California Public
Schools. K-12 teachers from 130 schools in 35 northern California school districts have come to rely on SchoolTime as an important part of the academic year.

All SchoolTime performances are accompanied by Study Guides that provide comprehensive introductory information on the programs students will see at the theater, plus connections to core curricular subjects such as social studies, literature and history. Designed to encourage pre- and post-show learning and discussion in the classroom, Study Guides support the Reading/Language Arts Framework and the Visual and Performing Arts Standards for California public schools. Study Guides are mailed one month prior to the performance and are available online.

Cal Performances in the Classroom
Cal Performances in the Classroom schedule

Cal Performances in the Classroom provides an in-depth experience of the arts and cultures represented in the SchoolTime series, with a professional workshop for teachers leading to an incomparable experience for students. Designed to enhance understanding and enjoyment of the performing arts, the program reinforces student comprehension in core content areas such as literature and social studies through lesson plans, classroom instruction, and a culminating visit to the theater. This program was developed in partnership with the Berkeley Unified School District as a team of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Program. Questions? Cal Performances in the Classroom
A 3-Part Enrichment Program

Step 1 Part 1: Professional Development Workshops for Teachers
Professional performing artists and area specialists lead participatory workshops for teachers in conjunction with select SchoolTime performances. The 3-hour workshops provide tools for teachers to effectively integrate the arts presented at SchoolTime into the classroom curriculum by implementing lessons that meet the California Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards requirements. Teachers receive a workbook that includes in-depth background on the art form and the SchoolTime program, with targeted standards-based classroom connections; audio and visual materials for classroom use; and a certificate of completion and/or BUSD District credit upon request.

Step 2Part 2: In-School Sessions with Artists
Artists work directly with students and participating teachers, reinforcing classroom lessons with hands-on experience in an art form. Students may learn dance, listen to the music of a particular culture, or participate in a theatrical exercise, depending on the performance your class will attend. (In-school sessions are subject to schedules and availability of artists).

Step 3Part 3: SchoolTime Performances
Students come to the Zellerbach Hall for a SchoolTime performance with comprehensive preparation gives them the ability to recognize elements of performance unfolding on the stage. This greatly enhances their experience and adds educational value to the field trip.

AileyCamp

Combining ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance instruction with personal development and creative communication classes and field trips for middle school students, ages 11-14, from the Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond and Albany Unified School districts, AileyCamp is the nationally acclaimed 6-week youth program conceived by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and locally administrated by Cal Performances. AileyCamp is not a training ground for professional dancers but, instead, uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, self-discipline, creative expression and critical thinking skills among underserved 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
